• Notes

John Moultrie was the son of the Revd Gerard Moultrie (1829-1885), an Anglican clergyman and hymn writer, and Elizabeth Anstey. Gerard was himself the son of the Revd John Moultrie (1799-1874), the poet and rector of Rugby. He was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1891 (Sheffield Evening Telegraph, January 24, 1891) . After the 1901 census of England and Wales, we have not found a verified death record, burial place, or later appointment for him. It suggests that he may have gone abroad as a missionary, but this is speculation rather than a documented destination. Alumni Oxonienses: Moultrie, Rev. John, 2s. Gerard, of Bright Waltham, Berks, cler. New Coll., matric. 17 Jan., 1880, aged 19 ; B.A. 1883. Occ. clergyman. CLERICAL CONVERT TO ROME. DONCASTER CURATE GOES OVER The Rev. John Moultrie, M.A., curate of Christ Church, Doncaster, has been received into the Roman Catholic Church by Father Strappini, S.J., of the Church of St. Aloysins, Oxford. The same priest received a few weeks ago the Hon. William Gibson, eldest son of Lord Ashbourne, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Sheffield Evening Telegraph, January 24, 1891. p. 2.
